Anaheim, Calif., Jun. 8, 2012 – West Anaheim Medical Center received an "A" grade in the just released Leapfrog Group survey, which is a national patient safety advocacy organization. This is Leapfrog's first Hospital Safety Score report involving more than 2,600 hospitals nationwide.
In California, 264 hospitals were graded. The grades are based on up to 26 weighted patient safety measures, including nurse staffing levels, processes for preventing pneumonia, infection and medication errors, and the rates of patient injuries, bloodstream infections, or surgical errors.
According to The Leapfrog Group, "The goal is to give patients the vital information they need and deserve before even entering a hospital. We hope people will use this score to talk with their doctor, make informed decisions about where to seek care, and take the right precautions during a hospital stay."
The report assigns each hospital a Hospital Safety Score in the form of a letter grade (A, B, C or score pending, which means the score would have been less than C).
According to the California Hospital Association, "California hospitals have long supported the public reporting of quality data. We believe that hospitals should be transparent with their quality and safety information so that consumers can make more informed decisions."
According to the report, 37% of California hospitals received an A, 22% received a B, 31% received a C and approximately 10% were given a "score pending."
